ET’s Report Reports suggest that testing of Jio TV OS has begun in India, indicating that its launch is now on the verge of happening. Reliance is taking the help of local TV manufacturers to test the operating system. This operating system being developed for television will be based on Google’s Android platform. In the market, Amazon is already licensing its Fire TV OS to some TV OEMs and brands like Samsung, LG, Skyworth and Hisense also launch their televisions with self-developed Tizen OS, webOS, Coolita OS and Vidaa OS respectively. In such a situation, to cut down the competition, according to the report, Reliance is considering giving its Jio TV OS license free.
The report further suggests that Reliance is joining hands with local TV manufacturers to beta test its Jio TV OS, gather feedback and fix bugs. Apart from this, the company is also planning to target the entry level market by launching its 4K and FHD TVs with BPL and Reconnect brands. Not only this, the company is also considering giving free license of the OS to Indian manufacturers.
Citing an industry executive, the report states that Jio TV OS will allow the company to bundle its apps like JioCinema, generate ad revenue and package Jio broadband services. It is also reported that Reliance will not charge licensing fees for Jio TV OS to make it more attractive. Jio TV OS being open source will also support app development for smart TVs and other devices.
Reliance developed Jio TV OS Announcement Last year, Reliance Jio Infocomm chairman Akash Ambani had said at the time, “We have been working on our own OS for TV for some time now and we are thinking extensively about how to launch it.”
