Now since India has done the discovery, the names should also be of India’s choice. The IAU has approved naming two of the craters discovered on Mars after two Indian towns, which come from UP-Bihar.
Report According to, three craters have been discovered in the Tharsis volcanic region of Mars. They have been named – Lal Crater, Mursan Crater and Hilsa Crater. The name Mursan comes from the Nagar Panchayat Mursan of Hathras district, while Hilsa is a subdivision which is in Nalanda district of Bihar. The third name which is Lal Crater is dedicated to India’s well-known geophysicist and former director of PRL, Professor Devendra Lal. The Lal Crater found on Mars is 65 kilometers wide.
The width of Mursan crater is 10 kilometers, while Hilsa crater is also 10 kilometers wide. The question arises that why these two names were chosen, when there are thousands of towns in India. The reason for choosing the name Mursan is the current director of PRL, Dr. Anil Bhardwaj, whose birthplace is Mursan. Hilsa is the birthplace of Dr. Rajiv Ranjan Bharti. Dr. Rajiv was part of the team that discovered new craters on Mars.
According to the report, this discovery is very important from a scientific point of view. The entire area of the red crater is covered with lava. The other two craters also have their own characteristics.
