Earlier, the translation tool used to support 133 languages, but after the expansion, now support for 143 languages is available in it. In November 2022, the company announced that it would support 1000 languages in the tool. These 110 languages added are part of the same announcement.
The special thing is that to choose the new language, Google has given priority to the most used variety of a language. That is, if a language has different dialects in a country, then the most popular dialects have now been added to the translate tool along with that language. For example, different dialects of the Romani language are spoken in Europe. So in such a situation, the AI model of Google Translate will choose the Southern Vlax Romani language which is a common variety used online.
Now Cantonese language has also been added to it. Google says that this language is one of the most requested to be added to Google Translate. Afar, spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, has also been added to the tool now. A quarter of all the 110 new languages added are from Africa.
