DRDO and IIT Delhi developed bulletproof jacket that can withstand 8 bullets of AK47

DRDO i.e. Defense Research and Development Organization in collaboration with researchers from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has developed a lightweight bulletproof jacket that provides 360 degree security. According to the IANS report, the Defense Ministry said that the jackets named ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat) have been developed at the DRDO Industry Academia Center of Excellence (DIA-CoE) located at IIT Delhi. These jackets were manufactured using polymers and made-in-India boron carbide ceramic material.

The ministry said that all tests of the jackets have been done as per the protocol. These jackets are lighter than the weight limit set by the Indian Army. They have armor on the front and back sides, which provides 360 degree security.

The government is ready to transfer the technology of the jackets that have been developed to three industries. This means that in the future, these jackets can be manufactured for large scale use.

According to the report, Dr. Sameer V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defense Research and Development and Chairman, DRDO, said that this lightweight bulletproof jacket is an example of the effective ecosystem of successful defense research and development by DRDO, academia and industry.

To involve the field of industry and education in defense research, DIA-CoE was formed by DRDO’s Joint Advanced Technology Center in IIT Delhi in 2022.

According to media reports, the jackets prepared are wide in size and low in weight. It can withstand 8 bullets. They were shot during the trial. The jackets withstood 8 bullets fired from AK47. The good thing is that his weight is less. The Indian Army currently uses bulletproof jackets weighing 10 kg. In comparison, these jackets are about two and a half kilos lighter.
